Gather your tax documents with Claude Code
Install a published Claude Code workflow that finds tax forms in Gmail, saves them, lists what's missing and builds deduction spreadsheets.
Explain it simply
Claude Code can search your email, download attachments and organize them into folders and spreadsheets. This guide follows a published workflow for tax season. It does the sorting; you or your accountant still check every number.
What you need
- Claude Code installed.
- The Gmail account your tax forms arrive in.
- Last year's return or list of forms, to compare against.
Steps
Point Claude Code at the published workflow
Start a Claude Code session, paste the link claudeblattman.com/tax-workflow/, and ask it to walk you through the workflow for your tax situation.
Install the /tax-guide command
The guide provides a tax-guide.md file. Copy it into your Claude Code commands folder (~/.claude/commands/), then type /tax-guide to start.
Collect the forms and track what's missing
The first skill searches Gmail for tax documents, downloads the attachments, pulls out key figures and keeps a list of what is still missing.
PromptWritten by our editors from the sources Search my Gmail for [tax year] tax documents: 1099s, 1098s, W-2s, K-1s and year-end statements from [banks, brokers, payroll provider]. Save each attachment to ./tax/[year]/inbox and list it in ./tax/[year]/documents.csv with payer, form type and amounts. Compare with last year's list and tell me which forms are still missing. Never store Social Security or full account numbers.Build the deduction spreadsheets
The second skill compiles deductions from several sources into spreadsheets ready for data entry in tax software.
Keep identity numbers out of the session
Never paste Social Security numbers or bank account numbers into Claude.
Have a professional review it
The guide itself says many people shouldn't do their own taxes this way, and explains when to get help.
How to know it worked
- Every expected form is either saved or on the missing list.
- Totals in the spreadsheets match the forms.
Watch-outs
- Tax documents are sensitive. Keep the folder private and delete working copies when you are done.
