An Automated Etsy Print-on-Demand Shop Reached 85 Listings in a Week, but No Traffic Yet
A builder drafts designs with AI, says yes or no, and code lists them on Etsy.
What happened A side-project Etsy shop built mostly with Claude Code automates the routine work while its builder approves designs, videos and prices. It reached 85 listings in its first week, but he found it "didn't bring anyone to it."

Explain it simply
Print on demand means a shop prints a shirt or mug only after someone buys it. You do not keep a pile of stock. This builder has AI draft designs. He says yes or no to each one on his phone. Code then turns a yes into an Etsy listing. The shop got 85 listings, but no shoppers had come yet.
How it works
- Write one-line concepts, with a banned list of brands, films, characters and celebrities, and let a script turn them into designs.
- Approve, deny or ask for a new version of each design in a small phone app. The log is kept as the record that you are the creative author, as Etsy requires for AI-assisted designs.
- Upscale approved art, have a second AI pass check the spelling and look for stray marks, and create the Printify products.
- Place the real print on AI-generated blank product scenes in code, and check the listing copy against Etsy's limits, with an AI disclosure line.
- Publish at most 8 listings a day and log daily views for each listing.
How it went
The plan was written on September 27, the first listing went live the next day, and there were 85 live listings by the end of week one. His first review pass approved 4 designs, denied 1 and sent 3 back.
- Limits: the listings didn't bring visitors, so the next build was Pinterest pins. Letting AI draw the product with the design on it changed the design, so the real print is now placed in code. Publishing 45 listings on launch day risked Etsy's flags for bursts of AI-heavy listings, so it now caps at 8 a day.
- Silent failures included Etsy dropping alt text and a database sync that reported success while syncing nothing. No sales figures are given.
Prompt
1. Concept line: subject | phrase | lettering | season. Block brands, films, characters, celebrities.
2. Append one written style guide to every image prompt (fixed drift to 8 of 8 on-style in the next test).
3. Human gate: approve / deny / regenerate-with-note, logged and never edited.
4. QA pass: read the lettering back against the exact phrase; look for stray marks.
5. Photos: generate blank scenes; place the real print in code; check placement against the supplier's mockup.
6. Listing copy: title, 13 tags, description; check against Etsy limits and include the AI disclosure line.
7. Publish at most 8 listings a day; log daily views per listing.
