A Solo Founder Moved His Live SaaS Off AWS in 4 Hours and Cut Hosting 63%
Working with Claude Code from 6 AM to 10 AM, a solo founder migrated his URL-shortener SaaS from AWS (about $120/month) to DigitalOcean (about $44/month) with live traffic and no downtime.

Explain it simply
A website has to live on rented computers called servers, and this founder was paying about $120 a month to Amazon for his. He worked with Claude Code, an AI that writes and fixes code, to move everything to a cheaper company while people kept using the site. Whenever a step failed, the AI read the error, figured out why and fixed it, and the move took about four hours.
What was done
He asked Claude Code to create GitHub Actions workflows that set up the new infrastructure, then worked through the migration with it: creating the server and managed database, seeding the database, setting up SSL through Cloudflare, switching DNS and fixing production bugs. Each time a workflow failed, Claude read the logs, found the cause, proposed a fix and updated the workflow.
How it went
The full move took 4 hours with zero downtime, and the monthly bill dropped from about $120 to about $44, a 63% cut. He compares this with roughly six weeks for a traditional migration. 29 tables and 3,000+ rows moved cleanly.
- Limits: several things broke along the way (an SSL setting, 50+ database errors from a different admin user name, Cloudflare 521 errors, broken page routing, and a mismatched environment variable), so this still needed someone who could judge Claude's fixes.
- It is one founder's write-up of a small app with about 1,000 requests a day. He notes AWS can still be the right choice for complex workloads.
Prompt
Opening prompt:
"I want to move this app from [current host] to [new host]. Create GitHub Actions workflows that set up the new infrastructure, and show me each one before it runs."
Lessons from the post:
- Check owner and user names in database dumps (the old admin user didn't exist on the new managed database).
- Make sure environment variable names match what the code expects.
- Use a rewrite rule, not a proxy path, for single-page-app routing in nginx.
Adapted from his opening prompt; the lessons are from the post.
Business fit
Who this helps, and how:
Startup founders and e-commerce sellers: audit an over-built cloud bill on a small app and move it with an AI pair programmer.
StartupsAgencies and freelancers: migrate client sites or apps to cheaper hosting faster, with every step saved as a re-runnable workflow.
AgenciesRetail store owners: if you run a custom store or booking site on expensive hosting, ask your developer to price a move like this.
Local & serviceLocal service businesses: cut hosting costs on a custom booking or quoting app without weeks of downtime planning.
Local & serviceContent creators: move a self-hosted membership or blog site to a cheaper host with less risk.
