A Machine Shop Owner Built an Offline Job Scheduler for 22 Machines With Claude
A shop owner trying AI for the first time had Claude build an offline Gantt-chart scheduler for his 22 machines that tracks job progress by counting bars left in the rack. Another shop in the thread runs about 100,000 lines of Claude Code-written code.

Explain it simply
The shop owner asked Claude, an AI chat tool, to build a simple schedule board for his machines that works on a computer without the internet. Each job shows when it is due and how much raw material is left, so he can update progress by counting bars in the rack. That helps him see what is on track without learning a complicated database program.
What was done
The owner had tried to build a database in Access but never had time to learn it. With Claude he made a job-scheduling Gantt chart for his 22 machines, sorted by due date, and asked for it to run offline with no cloud. Each job shows how many bars of material it needs, and every day or two he counts the bars left and updates the job, so the chart shows progress.
Another member uses Claude Code for full automation cells and shared how he keeps it on track.
How it went
The scheduler works offline and, in the owner's words, "will most likely make me thousands more per month" by keeping him on top of jobs. That is his expectation, not a measured result. The second member reports about 100,000 lines of AI-generated code running in the shop 24/7 across three automation projects.
- Limits: forum members stress that you still need domain knowledge. "If you don't understand your problem, AI is not going to save you." Claude can make unstated assumptions, and when it breaks something you need enough understanding to point it in the right direction.
- This is a forum thread, so there are no audited numbers.
Prompt
Scheduler request: "Build a job scheduling Gantt chart for my 22 machines.
Schedule jobs by due date. For each job, show how many bars of material are
needed. Let me enter bars remaining every day or two and show job progress from
that. Keep it an offline-only app, no cloud."
Lessons for larger Claude Code projects (from YoDoug):
1. Dictate the why and how; Claude writes the code.
2. Bring domain knowledge (sensors, communications, automation principles).
3. Keep .md files per component (cell overview, architecture, PLC, robot, machine, conveyor, IO lists) that Claude reads before coding; have it check that the docs match the code.
4. Use Git; commit and push often so you can roll back.
5. Have Claude write and run unit tests.
The owner's request, paraphrased, plus another member's lessons for bigger builds.
Business fit
Who this helps, and how:
Mechanics and tradespeople: build a simple offline board that shows each bay or machine's jobs by due date.
Local & serviceRetail store owners: track custom or backorder jobs on a chart you can update in a click, without a subscription.
Local & serviceStartup founders and e-commerce sellers: build a small production-schedule tool for batches, keyed to materials remaining.
Shopify & ecommerceAgencies and freelancers: for bigger builds, keep one spec file per component that the AI reads before writing code, and commit to Git often.
