A Tax Firm Had Claude Build an MCP for Its Intake Portal, So One Sentence Onboards a Client
Sagan Financial Group built a custom MCP with Claude on Truss's API, so one plain-English request creates a client's intake portal. The firm credits Truss overall with roughly halving prep time and cutting calls and reminders 50-75%.

Explain it simply
A small tax firm moved every client onto an online document portal. The co-founder then had an AI assistant build a connector to that portal, so instead of clicking through setup screens he can tell the AI that a client is onboarding and it sets up the portal for them.
What was done
The firm runs every client through a Truss intake portal and scans paper documents in.
Co-founder David Agan worked with Claude to build a custom MCP on Truss's APIs.
To onboard a client, he tells Claude they've met, the client is onboarding and to create a portal; the MCP does the rest.
Returns are still prepared in Drake; the case study also mentions AI-assisted prep on about 50 returns.
How it went
After moving intake to Truss, the firm reports prep time "cut probably in half", calls and reminders down 50-75% and 94.9% positive satisfaction across 98 client ratings. Those figures describe the Truss rollout as a whole, not the Claude-built MCP alone.
- This is Truss's own customer story, so it's promotional: Truss sells the portal the MCP connects to.
- The case study gives no separate figure for time saved by the Claude onboarding step.
- The co-founder notes the pricing "hurts a little bit" without giving a number.
Prompt
We met with [client name] today and they're onboarding as a [individual / business] client for [tax year].
Create their intake portal in [portal tool] with the standard checklist for [return type], add [spouse / business partners] if relevant, and set the first reminder for [date].
Confirm what you created, and list anything you couldn't fill in instead of guessing.
Built around the onboarding request quoted in the case study; needs your own connector to the portal's API.
Setup notes
- Check that your intake or portal tool has a public API before planning a connector like this.
- Test the connector on a dummy client and confirm nothing reaches a real client until you've checked the result.
