A Small Fund Automated Its Capital-Account Reconciliation and Let Its Fractional CFO Go
A small fund's manager used Claude Code to read partner capital account statements, reconcile them and build repeatable workflows around the fund's records. Around this point, he says, he let the fund's fractional CFO go.

Explain it simply
A two-partner investment fund used to pay a part-time finance chief. The manager started having an AI coding tool read investors' account statements, check them against each other and turn the routine into repeatable steps. At first he watched every step; now he doesn't, and the fund no longer has the part-time CFO.
What was done
When Opus 4.5 came out, he started automating fund operations with Claude Code: reading partner capital account statements, reconciling information and building repeatable workflows around the fund's records.
At first he watched Claude Code side by side with the records in Obsidian; now he doesn't keep Obsidian open.
He treats the model like a junior employee whose work he checks.
How it went
"Around this point, I got rid of our fractional CFO." He's candid about limits: odd exceptions broke skill workflows, and the model sometimes failed at tasks it had done correctly many times, which made unattended processes impossible at the time.
- No time or cost figures were shared.
- He now gets paid to help LPs apply AI to their funds; he mentions this but doesn't pitch it, so it's marked promotional.
- Pseudonymous author and an unnamed fund.
Prompt
Read the partner capital account statements in [folder] for [period].
1. Build a table per partner: opening balance, contributions, distributions, allocations of income and fees, closing balance.
2. Reconcile each partner's closing balance to [fund ledger / administrator report] and list every difference with the likely cause.
3. Write the steps you followed as a checklist I can rerun next quarter.
Don't edit the source files. If a statement doesn't fit the pattern, stop and flag it instead of forcing it.
Setup notes
- Keep a person checking every reconciliation; the author found the model sometimes skipped instructions it had followed before.
- Write down each odd exception as it comes up so the workflow can handle it next time.
