A Family Seed Farm Made 50 Years of Handwritten Crop Records Searchable With ChatGPT
Sharp & Sharp Certified Seed digitized a crop ledger kept since 1971 so past planting dates, yields and practices can be pulled up in seconds, and uses ChatGPT's voice mode on the combine to log loads without stopping work.

Explain it simply
Fifty years of crop notes lived in a handwritten farm ledger. She digitized those pages and connected them to ChatGPT so she can ask questions in plain English instead of flipping through paper. In the field she can also talk to it by voice to log loads or look something up while her hands are busy.
What was done
As Rachael Sharp prepares to take over the farm, she digitized her father's handwritten ledger, which covers every planting, yield and practice since 1971, and made it searchable through ChatGPT. In the field she uses voice mode to log loads, check details and get answers while riding the combine or walking rows.
She has also photographed stressed soybeans to ask what was wrong and confirmed a tractor part while her father was mid-repair.
How it went
More than 50 years of records are now searchable. "Every single crop we've ever planted is now accessible," she says. Questions that once meant digging through notebooks or relying on memory now take seconds, and field decisions can happen without stopping work.
- Limits: this is a short write-up by a use-case site, not the farm's own post, and it gives no time savings or yield changes. It doesn't explain how the ledger was digitized, and plant-diagnosis answers from a photo should be checked with an agronomist or extension office.
Prompt
After uploading or typing in the ledger pages:
"Using my farm ledger, list every year we planted [crop] in [field], with
planting date, yield and any notes on weather or practices. Point out the
best and worst years and what was different."
In the field (voice mode): "Log load 14: soybeans, field 3, [weight]. Add it
to today's harvest log."
Our prompts; the source gives none.
Business fit
Who this helps, and how:
Retail store owners: turn years of handwritten sales or ordering notebooks into something you can ask, "When did we last run out of this, and what did we reorder?"
Local & serviceMechanics and tradespeople: use voice mode to log job notes or check a part number with your hands busy.
Local & serviceLocal service businesses: capture what a long-time owner knows before a handover by digitizing their records and notes.
Local & serviceStartup founders and e-commerce sellers: search your own past order and supplier records instead of relying on memory.
