A Small Store's 90-Day Test of Shopify Magic and Sidekick Got Back 12 Hours a Month, Not 30

Over 90 days on a ~50-SKU store, AI drafts cut product-description time from ~45 to ~18 minutes and AI subject lines averaged +5.4 open-rate points across 11 sends. He expected 30 hours a month back and got about 12.

Who this is about: Small online store (owner not named; about 50 SKUs, ~3,000 orders a month)

Explain it simply

A small online store owner tried Shopify's built-in AI writing tools and assistant for three months. They sped up product descriptions and wrote better email subject lines, but sometimes made up product details and wrong numbers, so he still had to check and rewrite a lot.

What was done

He turned on Magic's product description generator: 8 of 12 test products were usable with light edits, 2 were generic and 2 left out details he'd supplied.

Sidekick rewrote 47 product-page FAQs in an evening; about 60% needed polish.

He sent AI-drafted subject lines to a ~10,000-subscriber segment, alternating with his own lines.

He now writes the first 40-60 words of each product page himself, has Magic draft the features-and-benefits middle, and uses Sidekick only for short, specific analytics questions.

How it went

Description time fell from ~45 to ~18 minutes per new SKU and subject lines averaged +5.4 open-rate points across 11 sends. Sidekick also got numbers wrong: it gave a 23.4% cart-recovery rate where the dashboard showed 17.2% and his own ShopifyQL query 17.4%, and a segment count was off by 11%.

  • Not promotional: we saw no product, course or affiliate offer in the post.
  • The page is on an AI-marketing content site with no named author, and the store isn't named, so none of the figures can be checked; the subject-line test wasn't controlled (the AI lines were also shorter).
  • Magic invented product details, such as sustainably sourced cork on a product with a synthetic base.
  • The missing 18 hours went into reviewing, fact-checking and rewriting the openings Magic couldn't handle, he says.

Prompt

PromptWritten by our editors from the source
Here's the opening paragraph I wrote for [product]: [paragraph].

Write the features-and-benefits section below it, matching the tone of my opening. Use only these facts from the product data: [specs, materials, sizes]. If a detail isn't in the list, leave it out rather than guessing. Don't write the call to action.

Setup notes

  1. Write each product page's opening yourself and let the AI draft only the structured middle section.
  2. Check every technical claim against your product data; the AI invents plausible details.
  3. Verify any number Sidekick gives you against the dashboard or a ShopifyQL query before acting on it.
